The Great Chicago Fire Tragedy of 1871

In 1871, the largest parts of the city of Chicago burned in what the world history recalls only with its name as The Great Chicago Fire 0f 1871. Even if the damage was indeed devastatingly large enough to cripple almost everything that Chicago build in the early years by its inhabitants, the local residents never gave up their hopes and put more faith instead to be able to build one of the greatest cities in the world to become a world architecture treasure. The Great Chicago Fire killed 300 people where 1,800 buildings were also ravaged to ashes and left almost 300,000 homes disappear with its raging fire rendering as much homeless residents in the history of Chicago.

The Great Fire Led to the Use of Steel Frames

The great fire was said to be attributed with the natural homes and buildings that were mostly made of wood and its abundance in the forests. this same incident also led to some other good things about Chicago like the implementation of strict fire safety codes that included a strong considerations based on masonry construction in the coming rebuilding of Chicago. Since Chicago is well known to be right beside the heart of the Chicago River, its naturally soft soil would not just allow masonry which later on gave way to the use of steel frames and one of the most important part of the history which is the making of the world renowned “skyscraper” for which Chicago became popular these days.

Chicago Became a Construction Icon

This later on proved that despite a devastating historical turnaround in Chicago’s industry and community life, the rebuilding of a new great city from the rubbles of the Great Chicago Fire awaits. This was once again proven with the desire of the city planners and engineers to make a radical design that would fit the natural soft soil of Chicago and this design was called as the Beaux Arts Tradition which was hindered by political debates. The citizenry did not wait as they all decided to make immediate reconstruction of the old Jeffersonian Grid. Since then, there was a building boom and this led Chicago to be recognized worldwide as one of the best trade, business and transportation centers of history of Midwest. The construction industry significantly developed new methods and revolutionary materials that would fit even the harshest conditions of soil and this helped Chicago rise as a world monument of established building construction.
